Essex, L.L.C.: Wealth Management Philosophy

Wealth Management                                                       Impact on Investment Selection

At Essex, L.L.C. we construct and manage portfolios based on each client’s goals, time horizon, and risk temperament.  The portfolios are diversified over many sectors and asset classes.  This wealth management process helps us optimize a client’s portfolio based on their individual needs.

We employ a proprietary, multi-faceted investment strategy.  This strategy involves assessing the current and prospective state of the economy and identifying market sectors that we believe will offer greater long-term return potential given the economic environment.

Once we have identified promising sectors, we select companies within those sectors that offer relative value and growth potential.  We search for and select companies that exhibit strong and sustainable earnings growth.  Additionally, we select mutual funds that offer low-cost investment and diversification opportunities.  Each mutual fund selected must have an objective that is consistent with our outlook for the economy and the markets.  We favor funds that have positions in stocks that we liked based upon our stock selection process

Our vision leads us to companies that we believe will be sustainable “stars” as the world continues to evolve.  From companies that are on the cutting edge of technology, to old line companies that see the future as we do, and are adapting their business to thrive in the changing economic environment.

Although we believe the world economy is ever-changing, we still utilize traditional methods for evaluating companies such as earnings, cash flow, macro-economic trends, management team, to name a few.  We look for companies that we find attractive and that have sustainable business models.

We don’t invest in stocks simply because they look “cheap” in comparison to others.  Our philosophy is to buy well-managed companies at reasonable prices.  The current decade will see significant advances in technology.  We will see drastic changes from our current methods of communication and ways of doing business.

Our long-term vision and our current view of the economy and the markets cause us, at times, to favor certain sectors.

Portfolio Selection & Rebalancing

At Essex, L.L.C., we employ a proprietary, top-down investment strategy.  This strategy involves assessing the current and prospective state of the economy and identifying market sectors which could offer greater long-term return potential given that economic environment. Once we have identified promising sectors, we select companies within those sectors that offer relative value. We search for and select companies that exhibit strong and sustainable earnings growth and that have favorable price multiples. Additionally, we select mutual funds that offer low-cost investment and diversification opportunities.  Each mutual fund selected must have an objective that is consistent with our outlook for the economy and the markets, and we favor funds that have positions in stocks that we like based upon our stock selection process.

Our model portfolios are developed for clients based upon their investment goals, risk tolerances, and investment horizon. These model portfolios allow our clients to visualize the importance of diversification and enhanced return potential under various market scenarios.

Growth: The model growth portfolio is recommended for investors with an investment horizon in excess of seven years. The growth portfolio provides the greatest potential for long-term return, but it does carry the highest level of potential portfolio volatility. Investors using the model growth portfolio should be willing to withstand relatively larger possible reductions in the market value of their account. Additionally, the model growth portfolio has been constructed to minimize income return while maximizing capital gain return.

Growth & Income: The model growth and income portfolio is recommended for investors with an investment horizon between three and seven years. The growth and income portfolio provides strong potential for long-term return while achieving lower potential portfolio volatility than the model growth portfolio. The model growth and income portfolio has exposure to fixed income securities, which can reduce fluctuations in portfolio value, and it will increase exposure to income return.

Income: The model income portfolio is recommended for conservative investors. The income portfolio has a larger exposure to fixed income securities.  Fixed income securities can lower total portfolio volatility. Income generation is the primary goal.

Fund Selection & Monitoring

Our mutual fund investment options are selected based upon a proprietary process that evaluates both risk and return potential. We then monitor each option regularly to determine that it is following its stated objective, investing in a manner that we believe is consistent with our outlook for the financial markets and economy, and selecting individual securities that we favor based upon our proprietary investment selection process. A mutual fund which fails to meet our criteria will be eliminated as a potential investment option.
